Week #21--Look for Ways to Help Others in Need Today (Caring for Others)

Scripture: Galatians 6:2 – “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Caring for others means recognizing when someone is carrying a weight too heavy to bear alone. In Galatians 6:2, the word for “burdens” describes crushing, overwhelming struggles—grief, hardship, temptation, emotional pain, or difficult seasons that can leave a person feeling unable to continue. God calls us to step in with compassion, support, and practical care during those moments.

At the same time, Scripture teaches that each person still has their own “load” to carry (Galatians 6:5)—their personal responsibilities, choices, and daily duties. Caring for others does not mean enabling irresponsibility or simply giving people everything they want. True love helps meet genuine needs while encouraging growth, wisdom, and responsibility.

A helpful way to distinguish the two is this:

  • Needs are things necessary for well-being, stability, healing, and growth—food, encouragement, prayer, guidance, emotional support, shelter, wisdom, accountability, or help during overwhelming hardship.
  • Wants are often comforts, preferences, conveniences, or desires that are not essential and may sometimes prevent a person from learning responsibility or depending on God.

Jesus carried the burdens of the hurting, the weary, and the broken, but He also called people to rise, grow, and walk faithfully. In the same way, we are called to help others without removing every responsibility from their lives.

Today, ask God to show you someone with a real need. They may need a listening ear, a meal, prayer, wise counsel, encouragement, financial help, or simply someone willing to stand beside them in a difficult moment. When we help carry the heavy burdens of others, we reflect the compassionate heart of Christ.

Prayer:
Lord, give me wisdom to recognize true needs and a compassionate heart willing to help. Teach me to carry the burdens of others with love, while encouraging growth, responsibility, and faithfulness. Amen.
